China Implements Visa-Free Travel for Cyprus, Denmark, and Greece
China has introduced visa-free travel for Greece, Cyprus, and Denmark, boosting tourism and strengthening ties. Following the announcement, searches for China-related travel surged on platforms, reflecting increased interest from travelers in these countries.
On September 27, 2024, China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the introduction of visa-free travel for citizens of Greece, Cyprus, and Denmark. This decision is expected to significantly boost tourism and strengthen bilateral relations between China and these countries.
Following the announcement, Ctrip, a major Chinese travel service platform, reported a remarkable surge in interest from travelers in these countries. Searches for China-related travel on Ctrip's overseas platform increased by 61% among Greek users and by 47% among Danish users within a day of the news.
As international flight capacities recover, travel between China and Greece is becoming increasingly frequent. Data from Ctrip indicates that flights from mainland China to Greece have reached 80% of their pre-pandemic levels. This year, bookings for Chinese tourists traveling to Greece have surged by nearly 70% compared to last year, while bookings from Greece to China have almost doubled. Popular destinations for Greek travelers in China include major cities such as Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, and Xi'an.
The visa waiver for Cyprus coincides with both the 75th anniversary of the People's Republic of China and Cyprus's National Day on October 1, highlighting a symbolic connection aimed at enhancing mutual understanding and cultural exchange.
As for Denmark, this policy underscores the strong strategic partnership between the two nations, which will celebrate 75 years of diplomatic relations next year. China hopes this move will facilitate more Danish visitors to China and encourages Denmark to provide similar conveniences for Chinese travelers.
Overall, these visa-free initiatives are expected to enhance tourism and foster deeper connections between China and these three European nations.
